If something can be said for this place it is that the atmosphere is wonderful, the staff is stellar (and good at English for the benefit of us not so well versed in French), and the food is very good. Portions are large, I only got halfway through mine and was considered a public embarrassment to my group. (jokes jokes)
We were allowed to wait at a table, which is not common practice as the restaurant can get very busy. So extra thanks for that! Throughout despite being busy the staff had time to swing by our table for a brief exchange of words, which to me as a Finn is very atypical but very welcome.
Would absolutely recommend.
Burgers are a must and the fries are fabulous. The staff are welcoming and willing to help. They also have a menu in English which makes it easier to order. Bathrooms are clean and the restaurant is very stylish with outside seating as well.
Let me tell you Yelpers a story about a girl from Texas who lives in Lyon. This girl moved here from Austin, TX - a vegetarian's heaven - and was extremely disappointed by most food she was offered at restaurants. Her standards began to drop. She became concerned that fresh, flavorful, vegetarian food was something only to be found in her kitchen from here on out. But then she stumbled upon Big Fernand, completely by accident, and had an epiphany. A delicious, delicious, epiphany.
At the bottom left of the front page of Big Fernand's menu, you will see an entry title "Le Lucien". It is advertised as the "burgetarian": a portobello mushroom, with Tomme cheese, sundried tomatoes, pickled onions, chives, and a cocktail sauce. It is served on a fresh-tasting bun with sesame seeds and actually comes with 2 portobello mushrooms for extra thickness. The sauce did not taste like what I consider "cocktail sauce" (that red stuff you dip shrimp in), but whatever it was was tasty. And there was so much cheese - between the two mushrooms (to hold them in place, I assume,) and more on top. Divine! The portobello mushroom "burger" was something I was definitely missing over here.
I ordered the menu, (of course,) so I got fries and a drink - all for 13€. The drink I ordered was a Ginger Orange Bionade - a malt beverage (with no alcohol - just deliciousness.) And then there's the fries. SEASONED FRIES, Y'ALL. I didn't think I would ever taste seasoned fries again in my life. Wait, let me say it again. THEY HAVE SEASONED FRIES. That felt good. I devoured the perfectly crisp and flavored little potatoes, dipping some in the "bbq sauce" they gave me (which did not look anything like the bbq sauce I'm used to but tasted just like it somehow!)
So five stars for an amazing vegetarian lunch experience, complete with the attention of the entire staff who were all very friendly and even wrote "Texas Forever" on my burger wrapper. You guys rock. I'll be back.
I'm a veggie, and I brought a veggie friend with me to Big Fernand on a chilly Saturday afternoon. I was recommended the place by someone who is not only married to a veggie, but also spent most of his life in Texas and is not easily pleased when it comes to burgers, so I came with some expectations.
My friend took the veggie burger option on the menu, while I went for the slightly pricier "make your own burger" option. With veggie options not usually getting much limelight in French restaurants, I usually do whatever I can to make sure my food is like a tasty punch in the face.
While ordering my burger, the friendly guy serving me notices my wonky French and smoothly switches to English for me, asking where we're from (England and Scotland, cheers matey wot wot HOWAAAAY). When I ask about which cheese in the list is the strongest, he not only suggests one, but also dips a little stick into the cheese to let me try some of it. Great service, basically. There's also an English-language menu, if that helps.
The burgers were good. My friend's burger was probably better than mine - mainly because of my own, questionable choice of ingredients - but I was happy with it. Not quite a punch in the face, but a pleasant slap. I was satisfied with the veggie options available when making my own burger, and I look forward to going back sometime, and trying another combination.
The fries were good. The pomegranite juice I bought was nice. I like the way the place is furnished. The place was small and busy enough to have a nice atmosphere, but not so busy that it was a pain to be there. The stereo was playing "Beat It" by Michael Jackson a bit too loudly when we came in, but by the time we sat down it was playing "Atomic" by Blondie at a good volume, and all was well again.
4 stars for being everything I need out of a little place to go for a quick burger with a friend or two. Well played, Big Fernand.
This place is amazing!
We are visiting from San Francisco and had this place marked before we left to try. The guys we met working there that night were funny and very helpful. They were singing to the 80's songs that were playing in the background (Video Killed the Radio Storm). It was like we were hanging out in our kitchen at home making things to eat. I wish we could of sat down with them at our table.
They have English menus in case you are like us and can only put together simple French phrases. You can build your own burger or select from 5 of the pre-designed burgers. You can also add a drink and/or dessert for a fixed price. There are 4 choices of meat; beef, chicken, lamb, and veal.
I recommend ordering your burger rare (no one lets you do that that in California, they only say they will). The fries are nothing like traditional US fries. They are seasoned before they are fried (I think) and served with a choice of 4 sauces. Go with the mayonnaise, you will never want to eat it from a jar again.
We both ordered different burgers; The Big Fernand and The Bartholomè, both were stacked with flavors. The thought that went into each layer really shined when you took a bite. You could see all the bits and pieces that went into the layers, not like other burger joints in the US.
Great ingredients
Great food
Great atmosphere
Awesome people
Favourite burger place in Lyon! I have both dined in and ordered online various times. It's quite full and crowded during lunch time but you still somehow manage to find a seat.
Their fries are vert delicious and so are the burgers. My usual order is their classic, the "Le Big Fernand". Their chicken burger, the "Philibert", is also very good.
They have a vegetarian option too.
The staff is very friendly, attentive and also spoke English, a great added bonus.
Deserves 6 stars if possible. Brilliant burgers. Had the Bartholme and it was delightful. Hard to find anything better than this. They had two beers to choose from which were both very good.
