My sister and I were walking back to our room to get our bags before heading to the bus station. We decided we had enough time to grab some lunch and came here. We were welcomed and immediately seated. Even though the place was pretty busy, we were given menus and attended to. We had to try the socca-- how can you come to Nice and not try the local specialty? We also ordered the cabrette salad.
The socca was really good. I've never tried it before, but if all socca tastes like this socca, then I want more socca in my life. The chickpea flavor was delicious with just the right amount of salt. Crispy on the outside, slightly fluffy on the inside, this thin pancake is my life.
The cabrette salad was also quite good. I personally think the hot goat cheese in pastry made the salad. Combined with the cool lettuce and tomato, I would definitely order this again.
These two items were enough to fill my sister and I up. The service was good and quick, so we had enough time to make it to our bus. I definitely recommend coming here even if it is to order some socca from the window to eat on the go.
Good place to try the local specialty!
The menu had English translations but they were not too easy to understand. The server didn't seem to speak any English, but we were able to communicate. This seems like a local place!
THE WAIT: None around 10:30am on a Thursday. Plenty of seats in the outdoor area. They were still fairly busy, though.
THE FOOD:
* La Napolitaine - 2 stars
This was pretty bad. It was basically reheated microwave pizza. Come here for the socca, not the pizza!
* Socca - 4.5 stars
This had an awesome fresh crisp. I loved the crust.
* Croque Socc 9,50€ - 4 stars
Pretty amazing combination of a croque and socca! Great flavor, just a bit oily and the sogginess makes the socca lose its crisp.
We went in with low expectations as we love Pipo for Socca but our minds were kind of blown by Socca d'Or :) the Socca is thicker and crisp on top and bottom and creamy in the middle!
We also had very nice Pissaladiere both the standard one and the anchovy one
And hubby went for a special one which was the pani panisse which he thinks will be the best hangover cure ever with panisse, a kind of bacon, ratatouille and mozzarella on an olive bread - all homemade
Great. Fast. Yummy. Good value. This review is the for the socca and pizzaole.
A family run restaurant that serves salads; pizza and very special and delicious socca. Staffs are friendly, food is quick; fresh; delicious and big portion. Mango-passion fruit - coconut ice cream was marvellous and the portion is enough for 4 persons. Price is very reasonable.
I stopped into Socca D'or on a cold February morning. The man made socca for me and it was excellent. It was a little thicker thank I have had and crusty...it was excellent and the service was friendly. Have Socca there.
Delicious and well-priced. The local specialty, socca, is very tasty - crusty on the outside, custardy on the inside. Had the cabrette salad and the chorizo pizza, also very good. Wasn't a huge fan of the goat cheese calzone that came with the salad, but that's just personal taste.
Small shop located in the streets behind the port, out of the usual tourist way but well worth the detour: the best socca in Nice no doubt. Only a limited number of tables so reservation is a must. Limited menu but all good: socca, salads, tarte de blettes. Now if you don't want to wait for a table, at least get a socca to go, you won't regret it.
We were last in Nice 15 years ago and ever since have been craving and trying to find and make good socca in the US, with only limited success. Today we FINALLY visited Nice again and decided to patronize Socca D'Or because of its excellent ratings on Yelp and Trip Advisor, and because the other places we saw online were either closed at the time we wanted (Monday around 1:30) or their ratings had slipped. We were not disappointed. The socca was hot and crusty on the ouside while smooth and custardy on the inside, perfectly done! When we had it before, it was served already topped with fresh-ground black pepper, and it is not peppered here, so when you go, be sure to season it with a generous hand for authentic results. We bought two "double plats" and an order of pissaladière (also excellently seasoned) and two bottles of delicious local rosé wine, which served four people heartily and inexpensively for lunch. Our greatest joy was introducing these local traditons to two friends visiting Nice with us, who were as captivated as we were so long ago. When you go, tell Tony we sent you; everyone was warm and welcoming, even though we arrived only 15 or 20 minutes before their afternoon closing time of 2:00 P.M. A little off the beaten path, it is well worth the effort to track it down.
