We came here after an absence of five years and it was just as good as we remember. The ambience is perfect and the food is divine. We started with the homemade pork terrine and sweetbread. The terine was nicely balanced and the lamb sweetbreads and mushroom In puff pastry could not have bEen better. Due to the richness of the sweetbreads my partner opted for the sole which had a lovely butter sauce, while I opted for the Lapin which is so rarely served in the US. The rabbit was lovely and the mustard sauce perfectly complimented. The deserts were veRy traditional but remarkable in their depth of flavor and lightness of touch. If you don't speak French don't worry everyone does even though everyone else in the restaurant appeared to be French the day we were there.

A Great Bistro in the 11th. Away from the tourist hordes (well somewhat away) you will find this perfect neighborhood place -- Bistro Paul Bert. We started with what we called pig nuggets: deep fried bite - sized porkie goodness and the absolute best bone marrow of my life!!! We followed that up with a massive cote de beouf (bone-in ribeye for two) which would easily feed three, especially if you are like us and have been on a glutinous rampage for a week. Nice wine list, including an affordable Crozes Hermitage. A note on French beef: many reviewers of various restaurants in Paris speak to their meat being tough. I am afraid poor ignorant Americans that you do not understand grass fed beef. Unlike most American beef that is corn finished in a feed lot, French beef is pasture raised. This develops a much more beefy flavor but a little less fat. Make sure to not order it past medium (a point) and if you really want a tender steak, order filet, as in filet mignon. Not my favorite cut in France or anywhere else for that matter, but to each his own. I prefer entrecote (ribeye), onglet (hanger), or the before mentioned cote de beouf. Afraid there was no room for desert. Next time!

Amazing. One of our favorite meals in Paris. First visit, we got cucumber gazpacho and their tomato salad to start, and then went with the classics: filet au poivre (which comes with fries), followed by cheese for dessert. Both appetizers were great, if not quite automatic re-orders on future visits. The steaks, though, were incredible -- perfectly medium rare and covered in that amazing pepper sauce. Truly fantastic. The cheese was also outstanding, and a big surprise in one sense: they drop off the board at your table (with seven giant blocks in all, on our visit) and it's all you can eat from there. I tried not to be a total pig, but I ended up eating a lot of cheese, all of which was really great. All in all, a fantastic meal, and I can't wait to go back next time we're in Paris.

Wonderful food, wonderful ambiance. Great service, perhaps slow, but it is Paris, so c'est la vi. You must get the desserts... the island on a cloud is incredible. Would eat here again, would recommend to friends. Can't say enough good things.

Had an incredible dinner at Bistrot Paul Bert while traveling in Paris. My hotel made a reservation for my boyfriend and I at 9 pm, but we ended up going at 8 and were seated right away. I would actually recommend going earlier because when we got there, only a few other tables were full (and with French-speaking parties) and our waiter was extremely attentive. Later in the evening, the restaurant became more crowded (mostly with Americans) and it was hard to get a waiter's attention. Everything we ordered was truly excellent. We shared the bone marrow appetizer which was large and so flavorful. My boyfriend and I both ordered the steak au poivre, which was cooked perfectly and covered in a delicious au poivre sauce. The French fries were also some of the best we had while in Paris. For dessert we had the grand marnier soufflé, which was also very large and so delicious. We loved everything about Bistrot Paul Bert - it is a must if you are in Paris!

Pretty much what I expected, lukewarm slow service and a really good steak. Medium rare in Paris and other parts of Europe for that matter is more rare based on North Americsn standards. The mean wont dissapoint but dont expect warm and fuzzy service which is pretty representative of Paris. Definitely end your meal with a suffle, one of the best we had in Paris.

This is the second time I've dined at BPB. The first time 3 years ago was deserving of 5+ stars! We even met the owner last time! The food here is great, but the service is lacking. The steak au poivre is delicious but you cannot get it in the 3 course menu - we asked if they would include it with an up charge but they said no. For €38 it is probably a bit pricey for the portion, but the sauce is amazing. We asked for it to be cooked medium well, otherwise they probably would have made it rare. They probably won't ask how you want it cooked, so be sure to speak up! The soufflé was delicious for dessert and Cost €11. The reason I deducted stars is because we were sat next to the window with cold air blowing in on an already freezing night. It's no fun to eat with cold air blowing in your face. I kept my jacket on during dinner. I told the waitress but she said sorry it's because it's an old building. They weren't willing to move us either. They should plug in some space heaters, it's not difficult. There was one waitress for the entire dining room, which is unfair to her. They should have more staff to ensure better service. Most of the diners were speaking English, so I guess the tourists have discovered it! Maybe go there if you're nearby, but I probably wouldn't spend €30 to Uber there and back again.

The writer Henry Miller said, "Hell is probably quite similar to most Paris bistros ... a bit overheated, somewhat too crowded, and a little too noisy for my tastes....but, and this is the important part, the food will be marvelous." He must have eaten at Bistro Paul Bert. We loved Paul Bert. You can tell it's an institution. Bustling, festive and slightly chaotic atmosphere with very good bistro food. Here are the best things we ate: Sole meuniere. A classic, well executed. Excellent preparation of this very delicate fish. They cooked it whole and I thrilled friends and family by deboning it myself. It was cooked in a light butter sauce. Foie gras. Huge slab with a ribbon of yellow something or other around it (don't be alarmed), either fat or jelly of some kind. Creamy and deep umami flavor. A lot of geese made the ultimate sacrifice for this dish, so reverence is in order between bites! Veal kidneys. I don't know if I got this because I wanted it or just to gross out my family, but regardless, I liked it very much. Excellent preparation. Family repulsed. Mission accomplished. Paris Brest. I haven't always been a Brest man but I may be now. I never ordered a Paris Brest but have seen them in bakeries. Our waitress explained that this dessert was named after a bike race between Paris and Brest, the regional capital of Brittany. When the dessert came to the table, I was blown away. It was huge in size and was like a gigantic doughnut cut in half and filled with a chocolate chestnut cream and drizzled with light caramel sauce. We loved this place and would return. They were also very accommodating to our children who also enjoyed it.

Visited Paris for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was looking forward to Bistrot Paul Bert and it did not disappoint me! I had one of the specials, a filet of beef in a creamy pepper sauce with house fries. The steak was cooked perfectly for me. The black pepper sauce packed a mild heat, tempered by the cream, and paired well with the beef. I thought the fries were perfect too. Golden, crispy, nice for dipping in the plentiful sauce. My dinner mates didn't agree with me about the fries. Both acknowledged a fondness for thick steak fries over crispy thinner fries, so I guess that was the reason they weren't as taken with them as I was. I also had my first taste of a "floating island" dessert. I'm normally not excited by meringue-centric desserts but the Île Flottante at Paul Bert was highly recommended by David Lebovitz on his blog so I decided to give it a try. A huge wedge of airy, perfect meringue was dusted with toasted almonds and colorful praline roses, surrounded by cold crème anglaise. It was attractive on the plate but incredible in the mouth. I can't describe how delicious this tasted. I've never tasted anything like it and it is my new favorite dessert. The decor was inviting with quirky details and good lighting. We got there at opening and it filled up fast. The crowd was a diverse mix of mostly tourists... maybe a few Parisians. It got bustling but our waiter was friendly and attentive (shout out to Vincent!). It was also very reasonably priced. I was expecting a higher tab in the end, given the quality of my dinner. My dining companions were not as impressed with the restaurant as I was and although I am not taking their opinions into account in my rating I thought I'd share their thoughts anyway. My husband ordered the fish which was bland and not deboned, two big no-nos for him. Both he and the friend who accompanied us weren't impressed with the fries, as I mentioned above. I feel that neither of them took into account the fact that bistro food is supposed to be unpretentious, and the price was very good for the quality, especially the quality of that pepper sauce and the floating island dessert. Or maybe it's a matter of personal taste. They both loved Les Enfants Rouges (our dinner destination the following night) which I thought had interesting concepts but was ultimately a pretentious and not very enjoyable dining experience (overly crowded room with plain decor; artfully presented but not very tasty food; aloof and unhelpful wait staff; expensive). Nobody looked like they were having fun at Les Enfants Rouges whereas everyone seemed to be having a good time at Bistrot Paul Bert. That plus good food can't be beat!

Went twice, once for dinner and again for lunch the next day. Classic Paris bistro that seems to be a hold-out compared to what is happening in the rest of the city. A little out of the way, but that means fewer tourists and more locals.

(Visited in 2014) According to more recent reviews, people don't think the place is worth going to; I can't comment on how it is now, but when we went, we had a great meal and a great time! The server brought over the chalkboard menu (more specials on the wall, too) and of course I was ordering the Eggs with Truffles! Delicious, as you might expect. Jim G loved his pepper steak and we both enjoyed the fresh, properly-cooked scallops. Friendly service and some wine, what more could you ask for?

An authentic French bistro, great local ambiance . Lots of different specials from a filet Au-poivre with French fries , and a great green salad. Super light and sweet Dover sole with great veggies. Topped off with a homemade soufflé. Worth try. Top it off with nice French staff.

For years I had wanted to go here, and finally on our second visit to Paris where we had more time on our hands, my husband and I made the worthwhile trip after visiting Pere Lachaise cemetery. We had an incredible lunch where our waitress was both welcoming, friendly and patient. The prix fixe lunch is an unbeatable deal, where we were able to get a starter, their famous steak frites, and a dessert for around 18 euro. I would return in a heartbeat, as I would love to try their steak au poivre and Paris Brest pastry for dinner :) I second the review below this, that it is a great idea for lunch or dinner to ask your hotel to make a reservation for you and get there on the early side - we too were seated promptly, but it filled within 20 minutes after opening for lunch on a Tuesday! Thank you for a fulfilling experience that I have been dreaming about for years, Bistrot Paul Bert!

Decadent to the power of two! We had 9p reservations and there were about ten free tables (& +/-25 occupied) They have a deal of 41eu for app, entree and dessert. If you opt for each individually app is 11eu and entree is 29eu. Staffs speaks English so the menu can be translated. Squid w citron app was to chewy. Good flavors but not perfect as a whole. The veal head carpaccio comes dressed in green w giant capers. It tastes incredible. Peppery, tangy, and just tasty. The pork pate (3/4" sliced terrine) is (personally) the way to go. It's a really REALLY well seasoned head cheese. Like the ones sold at Krizka in Greenpoint. Excellent. I opted for the sole that ran out by 9p, so there was another fish perfectly cooked. But there is salt on the table and I put some herbed butter from the steak in front of me. It comes w spinach that is surprisingly excellent (I don't have high expectations on veggie side dishes, I should quit that thought) the spinach tasted like is was quickly charred on th grill and then sautéed. Boeuf steak that looked like a prime rib cut w intermissions of fatty biiiiiiiiiiiits. I drooled and ate them all. Aaaaaaaalll fatty nervy tasty fatty nervy bits. Man. I love that stuff! The steak tartare (entre) is excellent. Peppery, tangy but you have about a 1" thick disc by 6" in diameter. If you are running on a paleo diet, this will fill ya. It's big! Like two cups. But I finished when everyone else was on a food comma. It's kind of addictive. For the dish to get and because it's a true champ by the way it's cooked, pork itself, and it's buddy the sauce. It was like a buttery steak sauce. This chop.s fatty bits were legiiiiiiiit. I never want fatty bits to end. Every bite is heaven. Hard working staff. There are gaps betweeen courses and you will appreciate that. Dessert: créeme caramele is flan w sugary burnt syrup. Good but there's apple pie w sour cottled cream -that is really baked half apples tightly tucked into a tartin, good but there.s the grand mariner soufflé. Baked at the moment pooofy, eggy, fluffy, and hot. Really good soft end to the meal but there is the Paris Brest, which to me- this is what to get. Imagine six profiteroles about a ping pong size each lined up together like a half dozen eggs baked w slivered toasted almonds, dusted w powdered sugar, and filled w a 1/2" layer of hazelnut cream. This is what you should get! The hazelnut cream almost has chestnuts in it?! It's delicious. I enjoyed this place very much. It is intense good French food. Note entres and deserts can be split for two- they are Americana big.

I visited Paris for the first time to celebrate my anniversary last week. My first stop was to Bistrot Paul Bert, admittedly because I am a die hard Anthony Bourdain fan and he pledged his love for this place a few times. I had my hotel make reservations and we got there right on time and were seated very quickly in a window seat which was perfect! Our waitress, Fannie, was so kind and friendly but clearly got the job done! She was so awesome! We had the filet au poivre that comes with frites and it was honestly the best filet I have ever had. We got a simple table wine which was very well priced and it was amazing. The show stopper was the Grand Marnier soufflé which was over the top incredible. If you are looking for a mouth watering meal, this is your place. The ambience is old French bistro. This is not a white tablecloth place, but honestly, you don't need that when the food speaks for itself. It was so good that I closed out my trip with a visit there on my final night. My recommendation is that you have your concierge at your hotel make the reservations. 8:00 p.m. was a good time to go as the place gets crowded fast.
