As one climbs up Villefranche's Rue de l'Eglise from the port with a lovely view of Saint Michel Cathedral, one encounters La Caravelle. The long established restaurant is considered a favorite among locals and visitors given its diverse and reasonably priced set menus and attention to offering regional French cuisine.
On my most recent visit, I decided to order one of the set menus and chose la Salade de Chèvre Chaud (goat cheese salad) as my appetizer. What differentiated this salad from similar salads in the region was that the goat cheese was prepared in two ways - stuffed in filo pastry with a honey sauce and then sandwiched between brioche chips. The dish was absolutely delicious!
I then chose the Sesame Crusted Salmon for my main dish. Overall, the salmon was well prepared, flaky to the touch, and finely drizzled with a teriyaki glaze.
My only recommendation for a 5 star dining experience would be to offer more creative desserts rather than the standard Tiramisu and Pannacotta to match the creative appetizers and main dishes.
In summary, La Caravelle is a terrific value and offers a fine dining experience!
These reviews don't give this place justice. Their 3 course selections are larger than most places. This was by far our best meal in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Perched in a narrow walkway, this charming restaurant was outstanding. I started out with the stuffed mussels and my wife had the Crab Salad. Both superb. My entree was the Seabresm Fish. Huge piece of fish with potatoes and a seasoned vegetable served in a molded floor cup. My wife had the lasagna...which was very good. We finished it off with our 3rd course...dessert. I had the cream brûlée and she had panacotta. Again, fantastic. We've had some real good meals on this 30 day adventure and this meal ranks in our top 5.
C'était excellent. Nous avons eu le plaisir de découvrir ce restaurant hier par hasard. L'accueil, le service attentionné et les plats... C'est le meilleur agneau que je n'ai jamais mangé ! Bravo au chef tout était délicieux et préparé avec amour, ça se sentait. Merci encore nous reviendrons !
